maKE & tAKE

Choose your wool from the current in stock selection and dye it using my Jacquard dye collection and crockpots. You will use white vinegar as a mordant. I am happy to show you the ropes and the methods I use to help you get the result you desire - or just trust your intuition and experiment! Expect the wool to remain in the crockpot for about an hour and a half. While it dyes you are welcome to purchase some ready to spin fiber and use one of my spinning wheels or, of course, to bring your own wheel and fiber so we can ‘sit and spin’ together while the dye sets. Or feel free to use that time to card some batts while you’re in the studio. Once your dye has set you will rinse the wool and pop it into a ziplock baggie to take home to dry.

Thinking about a fiber friend party that’s to DYE for? I have four crockpots available and each piece of wool you dye will use one. That means up to four people can be accommodated depending on how many pieces of wool you would like to dye. (One person could do four pieces, four people could do one piece each, etc. during a session.)

Current wool tops available:

Merino - $2.50/oz

Blue Faced Leicester (BFL) - $2.75/oz

85% Polwarth wool/15% Tussah silk - $3.50/oz

Falklands - $2.25/oz

COST: Price per ounce for your choice of fiber (generally 4-6 ounces per crockpot works best) plus a $10 fee per piece of fiber/crockpot

Create an art batt on one of two Louet drumcarders choosing from my extensive collection of dyed and natural fibers. I am happy to provide guidance and suggestions - or to let you get in the flow and just create as the spirit moves you!

What will you add to your batt? My cozy little studio is LOADED with options that are a feast for the eyes all easily accessible to the drum carding table. Current fibers available, both natural and colorfully dyed commercially or by me, include:

Wools (merino, falkland, polwarth/silk blend, corriedale, bfl, romney), Mohair top, Curly mohair locks, Mulberry and tussah silks, Nylon firestar, Bamboo viscose, Sari silk threads, Wool nepps, Alpaca, Angora bunny, Hemp, Mawata silk hankies, Angelina glitz, Ribbons and fabric scraps...

You may card as many batts as you like during your visit - as big as you can fit on the drumcarder (typically 3.5-4 oz) or as small as you like. Come alone or with a fiber friend (or three or four if you don’t mind taking turns with two carders).

COST: $8.00/oz for completed batt

*Fibers may also be purchased a la carte while you’re visiting the studio (or in my online shop)
